A novella by German author Thomas Mann (translated by Kenneth Burke), Death in Venice is the story of a writer who visits Venice and is liberated, uplifted, and then increasingly obsessed by the sight of a boy, ‘Tadzio,’ in a family of Polish tourists.

Mann uses the story to illuminate certain convictions about the relationship between life and mind.

Mann’s original intention was to write about “passion as confusion and degradation” after having been fascinated by the true story of Goethe’s love for 18-year-old Baroness Ulrike von Levetzow, which had led Goethe to write his Marienbad Elegy. He was also influenced by Sigmund Freud and his views on dreams, and by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who had visited Venice several times.

The recent death of composer Gustav Mahler, and Mann’s own interest in a boy during his 1911 vacation in Venice, were additional experiences occupying his thoughts when Death in Venice was written.
