One night, he hears a story about an elderly countess who lost a fortune—but then won it back with the secret of three winning cards.
Herman becomes obsessed with learning the secret, and using it to accumulate wealth.
In the story, Pushkin’s character of the elderly countess was inspired by Princess Natalya Petrovna Golitsyna. She served as the lady-in-waiting for five Russian emperors, and was 92 when The Queen of Spades was written. She had supposedly been a successful gambler who revealed the secret three cards to her grandson.
The card game of faro also plays an important role in the story. One player bets on a winning card. The dealer then begins turning over cards, burning the first to his left. The second card is placed face up to his right; this is the first winning card. The third card is placed face up in the left pile, as a losing card. The dealer continues turning over cards, alternating piles until the bet has been won or lost.
